Top Destination Wedding Locations in the US

You're craving a destination wedding, yet you want to stay close to home—or at least in your home country. And it's not a bad idea. After all, guests won't need passports, and the logistics are a little easier, although it's not the most budget-friendly option. No matter your reasoning for staying in the United States, here are my tips and recommendations on the top destination wedding locations in the US.

Why have a destination wedding in the US?

Great question! With all of the stunning locations around the globe, the United States may not be the first place that pops into your mind. However, with the rise of micro weddings due to COVID, there is a growing trend of having stateside destination events.

Weddings that once hosted hundreds of guests in a couple's hometown are now getting smaller and more curated. It's the perfect opportunity to consider getting married somewhere else. Even though our thoughts float to distant locations, it's possible to get that far away feeling by staying in the US. It's a big country with many affordable destination wedding locations.

One major plus is that a destination wedding in the US is a fabulous way to escape the season. If you live in South Florida and want to get married in July, you can head somewhere more temperate. Conversely, if you live in Minnesota and want a January wedding, you can head to southern California to have a break from the snow. The choice is yours!

Logistics for an Intimate Destination Wedding in the US

It's natural for folks to think about places in the Caribbean or coastal Europe regarding destination weddings. It's no wonder as these locations are perfect for a wedding outside of the US. However, if you want to stay within the United States, it's essential to realize that the logistics for a Caribbean destination wedding are quite different than one in the states.

Countries like Mexico and the Caribbean islands are filled with resorts that offer all-inclusive destination wedding packages. Unfortunately, tidy packages aren't as standard in the United States. While most resorts can roll all of your vendors and accommodations into one neat package, you will have to pull bits and pieces of your event together if you stay stateside.

Your venue may have a few in-house vendors, such as a caterer and DJ. However, you may have to search for other vendors and reserve room blocks. All of that is ok, but it also can be a little cost-prohibitive. None of this is to discourage you from planning a destination wedding within the US's borders, but it's essential to know a few of these things up front.

Popular Destination Wedding Locations in the US

Hawaii Destination Weddings

Not only does Hawaii offer a tropical vibe, but there are multiple islands and a variety of beaches to host your destination wedding. The great thing about Hawaii is that the weather is relatively moderate all year long. Plus, your guests can have fun exploring and doing activities, such as snorkeling and visiting active volcanoes. Also, seize the opportunity to incorporate Hawaiian traditions into your big day. Greeting friends and family with leis and hiring hula dancers for your rehearsal dinner adds one-of-a-kind elements of fun.

California Destination Weddings

Yes, California is a big state, but that means that you have various options. Sonoma and Napa's wineries offer beautiful views of hills peppered with vineyards. San Diego is more of a posh spot for those who want an air of sophistication. The state is also filled with mountains, lush resorts, and history, so there truly is something for everyone when getting married in California.

Puerto Rico Destination Weddings

Heading to Puerto Rico for your destination wedding offers the Caribbean vibes some couples crave. Puerto Rico is a bit farther away and requires a plane ride, but Old San Juan's sights are worth the distance. There are also rainforests and beaches throughout the US Territory, which are beautiful backdrops to say, "I do." Guests also won't need a passport, so they can get away from it all without the hassle of going overseas.

Florida Destination Weddings

Florida is another state that seemingly has it all in the form of gorgeous weather, sandy beaches, and a laid back vibe. Several islands, such as Key West and Sanibel Island, would make for a beautiful getaway for you and your destination wedding guests. Be aware that June through November is considered hurricane season, so talk to your planner about an ideal timeframe.

Unique Destination Wedding Locations in the US

Colorado Destination Weddings

If you and your partner are outdoorsy types, then consider Colorado. It's a great year-round destination. However, that doesn't mean that it's warm and sunny all of the time. If you enjoy winter activities, such as skiing and tubing, getting married overlooking the snowy mountains is perfect. Of course, the landscape is equally beautiful in the summer with the added benefit of warmth.

New England Destination Weddings

New England includes the upper northeast states, such as Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Quaint towns with seaside views are all along coastal New England, making for a unique destination wedding type. It's one of the few places you can charter a windjammer for you and your guests as part of your celebration. If you adore freshly caught seafood, getting married in New England is a fabulous idea. Summer and early fall are the ideal times to say, "I do," in the US's northeastern part.

Oregon Destination Weddings

When you think about the west coast, don't forget about Oregon. It's filled with stately coastal redwoods, and the inner part of the state has a plethora of waterfalls. If getting close to nature seems like the perfect way to celebrate, Oregon is a worthy consideration for the adventurous, outdoorsy couple.

Arizona Destination Weddings

Red clay, angled mountains, and unique landscapes describe Arizona perfectly. Spring and fall are ideal times to plan a destination wedding in Arizona as it gets somewhat cold in the winter and has dry heat in the summer. You have a little leeway with your timeframe if you are planning an indoor event. You and your guests can also visit the Grand Canyon as part of a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Alaska Destination Weddings

Yes, it's almost like going out of the country, but Alaska is such a unique state for a destination wedding. It has a beautiful coastline, and the Northern Lights are quite the draw from mid-September through April. That's also during the colder—and darker—season, but it can be well worth it if you want an Alaskan destination wedding.

Wow! The United States is filled with such unique places to get married. Whether you like winter or summer, adventure or quaintness, and beaches or mountains, there is something for every couple who is considering a stateside destination wedding. Whether you pick one of the top destination wedding locations in the US or head somewhere unique—honestly, any state would do!—the USA is a fabulous place to get married.
